A greenhouse is a great way to ensure that you have fresh vegetables to eat year-round. It is also a great place for you to put delicate plants during the winter months when you don’t have room inside of your home and you cannot leave them outside. However, it isn’t easy to set up a greenhouse. There are several important things you need to consider when greenhouse building and most people do not realize it.

Before you begin construction, you will want to think about the overall design of your greenhouse. Do you want it to be attached to your home or do you prefer it to be freestanding? There are pros and cons to each of these choices. Less cost comes with an attached greenhouse, but it should still be separated by doorways to keep the moisture level down in your home. This decision may also be based on whether the wall you would want to add on to is on the southern side of your home. You want the greenhouse to get the most sun possible in a day.  On the cooler sides of a greenhouse, you will want to add more insulation and glazing, or glass, if it is not connected to your home.

Inside the greenhouse, you will also want to plan out a few things. You may want all of your vegetables in one area while winter plant space is on the other side. You may want to ensure plant boxes are close, but not too near one another. Some people may also think that they need a large path to walk around inside of the greenhouse while others choose to have small pathways. The truth is; as long as everything is easily accessible, it doesn’t matter how you layout the inside. Therefore, you may choose to have small paths, small planter boxes, and access to all sides of the boxes.

There are kits available that can make all of the building process easier to handle. These kits may include steel beams and other important features that will make the difference between a great greenhouse and one that does okay. They also make it easier for someone who has very little carpentry skills to erect a greenhouse. At the very least, you may want to consider a kit to help you get started building the greenhouse you’ve always wanted.
