Project Name
Rembrandt in Southern California virtual exhibition
Project Description
Rembrandt in Southern California is a virtual exhibition highlighting Southern California museums' holdings of paintings by Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn (1606-1669). A dedicated Web site rembrandtinsocal.org informs and promotes Rembrandt paintings at public cultural heritage institutions in the area, created by the J. Paul Getty Museum in collaboration with the Hammer Museum, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in Los Angeles; the Norton Simon Museum of Art in Pasadena; and the Timken Museum of Art in San Diego. Unlike the limited duration of the average museum loan exhibition, this collective effort of displayed works continues indefinitely. The Web site serves as a centralized resource, featuring a downloadable guide, audio tour/podcast, map, associated programing, and links to the five institutions' Web sites (with visit information). The site serves all five host museums and targets a broad walk-in audience of residents and travelers--both physical and virtual. In addition, a Wikipedia entry was created. One of the first regarding a museum exhibition, the entry on Rembrandt in Southern California was created to document this unique undertaking, to provide historical context about collecting in Southern California, and to encourage public participation in the project.
